OK, Jessica (my 14 year old) wants to dress as the character "River" from Firefly/Serenity for InConJunction this year. I have one week to come up with a dress for her. However, I'm not a fan of the show, so I can only get sketchy pictures of what she looks like from Google Image.

Jess said something about a plain, dark colored dress, either long or short-sleeved, but from the pictures I've seen it seems to be slightly more involved than that.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can help her put together, for not very much money or in not a very complicated fashion?

I really want to help her out, she thoroughly enjoys the masquerade & wearing a hall costume; I was expecting her to go with a character from the anime she likes (Naruto) but she picked this instead, I believe thinking it would be easier.

TIA for any help anyone can give.

EDIT: Would a deep forest green flowy dress with short cap sleeves work? I also found a sleeveless black knit tank dress.

My friends list RAWKS!

Dunno if any of those will help (and the last is for a doll), but that's a start...if I had a way to get you pictures of my friend Susan's costume...wow. :-P

Lemme make this real easy for you...

A plain, dark blue slipdress that comes to just below the knees, paired with a pair of flat-heeled black boots (preferably with buckles on the front) that come up to the knees.

If you can find a turquoise Asian-style jacket or a black shrug to pair with it, even better.

Depending on the con's weapons policy, she can have a bo staff as a prop.

We have all of the episodes plus the movie if you'd like to borrow them to see a few clips. That might give you a better idea.

Just about anything flowy is pretty much River's style. In Serenity she wore a really pretty deep purple-ish summer dress with spagetti-string straps. Something in a tank dress would work pretty well too... mostly dark colors, always very flowy and a bit peasant/gypsy-ish. If you've got any kind of dark/cool colored shawl that looks a bit ragged that'd be good too. I have a crocheted shawl that *may* work if you want to borrow, although it might be a bit big on her.

oh, and the hem of the sleeveless dress was uneven, if I remember right. Everything on River sorta looks like it was draped on her kinda haphazardly.
